What Are The Dark Ages?
The period between New Year’s and Spring Break is often the longest span of “no leave” during the year. Combine that with the typical grey weather and someone 50+ years ago coined the term Dark Ages. There are occasional brutal winters wherein the slang changes to Ice Ages.
Ask your Mid what the “Happiness Factor” is today. Mathematically it is (# days of leave) / (# days until leave). Everyone watches it creep toward infinity as a measure of progress through the Dark/Ice Ages.
One thing that has sustained Mids over the decades, particularly during the Dark Ages, is knowing that folks back home are thinking about their well-being. To that end, Parents Clubs around the country send care packages to their Mids during February. At the Dark Ages Party, Club members bring items to help fill care packages for all of our Kentucky Midshipmen. The packages will then be personally driven by Club members to Annapolis and hand delivered on the Yard afew days after the Party.
Any item that would be appropriate for your daughter/son to have in Bancroft Hall would be great for the goody bags. In addition to dropping in a treat, some families will also write notes of support, humor, or encouragement to include in the care packages. Your creative thinking will help you shop for an item (or more if you like) to include. Please keep in mind you will want to bring a quantity of 64 as you shop. A few ideas for you of items that have been included in the past are: trail mix, protein bars, popcorn bags a packet of Emergen-C, a bottle of Gatorade, dental floss, playing cards, etc….We will be assembling 64 care packages (in a large brown paper shopping sack).
The Annual Care Package Event is a favorite event for the Club!
Hail to the Class of 2025! The Annual Hail and Farewell Picnic is a day for the Class of 2025 Plebes-To-Be to meet the families of current Kentucky Midshipmen and those in the Fleet.
You will not want to miss this event as the Plebes-To-Be will have the opportunity to meet each other before I-Day! Also, Blue & Gold Officers will be present and a special Link in the Chain representative (Class of 1975). While the Plebes-To-Be meet to have questions answered, the parents and other family members will have the opportunity to talk with other Navy families about Life on the Yard!
Farewell to the Class of 2021!!! A round of applause and recognition to all the newly Commissioned Ensigns (Navy) and 2nd Lieutenants (Marines)!
The Club hopes to see families attend from the Classes of 2025, 2024, 2023. 2022, 2021 and those in the Fleet! If you have not had the opportunity to attend a Parent Club event in person—You do not want to miss out on the Annual Picnic!!!
Date and Time: Sunday, June 13th at 2:00PM (Eastern Standard Time)
A very casual picnic—call it a late lunch or early supper where the whole family is welcome to join your Plebe-To-Be!
RSVP: More picnic details will be coming out. But for now, if you could please RSVP (and send a private message with the # of people in your family attending). The Class year of your Mid or if they are in the Fleet is also helpful.
Go Navy! Beat Army!!!
